By now, you must have seen or heard that medicine can come in various forms, shapes, sizes, and dosages. It can be synthesized in a lab or derived naturally from plants, animals, sunshine, and water.
Medicine can also come from sound and movement, silence and stillness, from stories, conversations and connections with others.
Medicine is in the food that we eat, the water that we drink. It can even come from the thoughts that we think! For example, when we think good, happy, positive thoughts, we release good, happy, positive hormones in our brain (dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and the like).
The point is, medicine can be found all around us. At its core, medicine is a substance or the science and art of maintaining health and preventing, alleviating, or curing disease.
Medicine helps us feel better.
Did you know that sitting in a circle with a group of people can be one of the most powerful forms of medicine?
Simply being present next to another person in a circle creates energetic exchanges that are therapeutic in themselves.
To maximize the healing power of being in a circle, we can set an intention, structure it with a beginning, middle, and end, and incorporate rituals. This adds meaning and connects us to traditions that have come before us.
Whether you realize it or not, you've likely experienced healing circles in your life—perhaps around a campfire, a dinner table, a Thanksgiving gathering, or a game of cards or Scrabble.
Remember feeling so great after these experiences? You loved it because you got a dose of circle medicine!
In the latest episode of the Second Spring Podcast, I chatted with a wonderful circle facilitator and teacher about this particular concept. I especially loved our conversations around the women and mom circles. If you have a son, you will want to hear about the mother and son circles!
Mitle Southey is a former lawyer turned circle facilitator, a teacher and founder of Circle School - a wonderful training platform that helps teach and support wellbeing practitioners to hold inclusive and enriching circles and gatherings for their clients and communities online and in person.
Mitle believes in the power of Circle to offer us spaces of collective care and sacred activism, and to contribute meaningfully to our lives and businesses.
I am happy to have experienced one of these powerful circles in person during a retreat that Mitle co-facilitated in Southern England, in 2023.
Mitle is also a mother, a midlife woman living in the beautiful British countryside. I am so honored that you said yes to the Second Spring podcast.

As you may have heard, I am currently not able to offer in-person sessions. Know that I miss seeing you and holding circles of two!
I am taking new coaching clients since we can work together from anywhere. If you are looking for support around transitioning in your midlife whether it’s dealing with empty-nesting or physical and emotional changes, I am here for you!
I invite you to check our some options where we can work together.
