The Uber Boxer
An unsolicited coaching session you might need
“We are going in the wrong direction.”
I interrupted the conversation my husband was having with our Uber driver who graciously apologized. He was following directions to his house in South London without knowing.
Or so he said.
Our destination was to the north.
Turning around, he began to tell us about his bygone years as a boxer.
From Sierra Leone, raised in Britain, our uber enthused driver seemed proud of his past accomplishments—and even more proud of his current health regimen.
“You know, chair Tai Chi and yoga saved my life,” he continued from his previous conversation with my husband.
“Oh yah, I need to do that too,” echoed my other half.
The very same words I have heard from this same man for decades.
“You have to do it, man. It will make you feel so much better,” offered the Uber driver, apparently turned Uber Health Coach specifically for his one captive client.
He continued:
“Set your alarm in the morning. No snoozing! Just get up and do a few minutes of Tai Chi or yoga every day. It does not matter what day it is.
“It does not matter what you are feeling. Commit to yourself that you will take care of your body every day.”
The accidental coach got firm.
I looked over at my husband, who at this point looked rather sheepish.
Disciplined he is. But committed to stretching and loosening his aging tight muscles?
Not so much.
The two men bantered a while longer before we reached our destination. I thanked the Uber Health Coach for the free session my husband apparently needed.
As for me, I appreciated his dedication and passion. He clearly loved how he felt from the consistent practice of Tai Chi and yoga.
With one caveat.
I disagreed with him that you must disregard “whatever you are feeling.”
Instead, I believe in focusing on the feeling of
determined
focused
inspired
or simply
committed.
There’s always a feeling underneath every action.
There’s always a narrative preceding the feeling.
Do not disregard your feelings. Instead, choose to:
✅ Be intentional.
✅ Know what you want.
✅ Strategize how you will get it.
✅ Execute consistently
Chair Tai Chi?
Yoga?
Walk, run, lift, rest, sleep?
You don’t need an accidental Uber Coach to get lost before you redirect yourself toward your very own destination.
I don’t know where that is — but you do!
With love,
xoxo
