Where should I begin today?
What story would you like to hear?
I have to admit it’s taken me several attempts to write this post—not because I don’t know what to say, but because there’s both a lot and very little to tell you.
I could go deep and share my recent midlife revelations. I could stay light and talk about America’s 250th birthday, the World Cup craze, the Travis & Taylor coronation, the current Mercury Retrograde, or this nasty tropical heatwave we’re having.
I could also tell you about the new Harvard Medical School course I just started.
Or keep it simple and share how I’ve been loving Joy in July.
That feels more fun!
We’re only a few days into this 31-day project. So far, I’ve loved taking a few moments each day to notice something that brings me joy.
Somehow I’ve also found words to accompany the images. I hesitate to call it poems because I wouldn’t say I know how to write or understand poetry. The words seem to emerge naturally from these moments — a surprise that feels like joy in itself.
Not to add another item to your to-do list, but I do recommend giving yourself permission to find joy each day this month.
You don’t have to take pictures. You don’t have to create anything. Just notice what catches your eye, stops you in your tracks, or sparks your curiosity.
Maybe something makes you laugh.
Maybe something brings tears to your eyes.
Maybe something delights your taste buds.
Just notice it.
Collect these little pieces of joy. They have a way of slowing down time just enough to help you live a little more fully.
I was with a dear friend this weekend who has been joining me in the Joy in July project. She said, did you know that…
“The amount of joy in your life depends on your ability to see it.”
That’s a mic drop, right?
Don’t keep yourself from seeing joy!
Share it when you can, it’s way more fun that way.
With love,
xoxo,
Dr. Kit
