Fun within Rules
The Singaporean way of life that we can adopt!
Greetings from Singapore!
It’s the middle of the afternoon here as I write - I’m taking a break from the heat of the day to say hi to you.
Let me share what is around me.
In the hotel lobby, I am surrounded by a variety of ethic faces; I hear multiple languages being spoken. Even though English is the official language of Singapore, most people speak something else as well - Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay, etc… There are also travelers like myself, along with locals and expats conducting business.
Looking around, I also see several busts of important people who helped found this small but mighty country.
Singapore is indeed a small, mighty, diverse, and yes, very orderly nation.
What you’ve heard about Singapore - its rigid rules around gum chewing, cleanliness and order - are all true. I am only here for a few days, but already completely impressed by the place, the people, and their integrated cultural and social coexistence.
Ethic Chinese, Malay and Indians all call Singapore home. In fact, they just consider themselves “Singaporeans” regardless of their ancestral origins.
Like the people, the food here could be considered confusing, or plain marvelous. Noodles mingle with roti and rice. Sambal, fermented tofu, chiles and chutney get combined in multiple dishes.
Granted, you won’t find food carts randomly selling things on the streets like you do in other Asian countries (unmfortunately). Everything and everyone is well-organized; trash cans are well-placed and well-signed. People line up properly in queues. All in all, there seems to be little chaos here.
Singapore is a high-tech, world-class nation with an air of old-world colonialism, and courageous independence. Although people here live within solid lines and rules, they seem to do so with joy and gusto!
It’s fun to witness, and totally inspiring to emulate.
It makes me wonder how we can do that anytime, anywhere for ourselves: to live within a healthy structure with joy and gusto!
What would that kind of life look like for each of us?
What would be your healthy “structure” - which could be anything from values, habits, routines, your life’s non-negotiables.
What would be your healthy “independence” - things that you would allow yourself to do, to enjoy, to indulge, without any guilt or regrets?
How can we implement the essence of this small, but mighty country into our way of life?
I want to attempt this concept for myself as I navigate this next chapter as an empty nester, a perimenopauser, and a holistic health coach for you (and me)!
Speaking of which, I am looking forward to returning to work next week after a long break.

That’s it for this week. I am off to experiencing the Singapore Sling at the Long Bar (apparently the drink’s birthplace) with my family. Wish me luck - I don’t drink hard liquor! 😆
With love and gratitude,
xoxo
Kit
P.S. We attempted the Long Bar which was way too touristy. Instead went to the Writer’s bar. I did not have the Singapore Sling, but managed to taste their alcohol-free drink called Misdemeanor. Who knew it could be fun to sit at a bar without a booze?
P.P.S. I would love your support as I continue to build Kit’s Holistic Kitchen to serve you, your health and well-being. You can do so by choosing your subscription plan below. Thank you so much!
