Clean Up Your Room
Don't procrastinate. Reorganize.
In high school, I thought something was wrong with me.
Whenever I had to study for an exam or write a paper (by hand, of course), I first had to make my bed, put away the laundry, and clean my dorm room before I could sit down and focus. Sometimes I’d suddenly decide I needed a bouquet of fresh flowers to liven up the space—which, of course, meant leaving campus to buy one.
I thought I was procrastinating.
But the pattern followed me into college and beyond. I came to realize I wasn’t avoiding the work. I was actually preparing for success.
I needed my physical space to feel orderly so my mind could settle and focus. It wasn’t procrastination. It was reorganization. I was creating outer calm so I could find the inner quiet I needed to take on the task in front of me.
Back then, the tasks were mostly schoolwork. Oh, how simple those days were!
Looking back now, I can see it differently. What I was really doing was clearing stagnant Qi from my environment so my inner Qi could flow with more ease.
As I’ve gotten older, that’s still important. I’ve also discovered that the opposite has become just as relevant.
Now I find myself needing to tidy my interior room before I can properly navigate my outer one.
Cleaning up old stories and beliefs before I can see clearly has become an essential practice.
Tending to my emotions so I can respond instead of react.
Creating spaciousness within myself so I can show up in my life—and for the people I love—with greater presence instead of noise.
With authenticity and love instead of anxiety and fear.
Maybe that’s what growing older asks of us.
When we’re young, we organize the room so we can think.
As we grow, we learn to organize the mind, tend our hearts, and honor the spirit so we can move through life with intention and presence. Easier said than done. But surely worth the effort.
We’re never just cleaning a room, you know.
We’re decluttering our space—physically and emotionally—so we can fully live.
Don’t procrastinate.
Reorganize.
Much love from here,
xoxo

P.S. The summer solstice has come and gone, and the Strawberry Full Moon is getting ready to shine on Monday. There will be a little more light on what we’ve been carrying—perhaps even on truths we’ve been ready to face for real.
The room doesn’t reorganize itself—and neither do we.
If you’d like some support this summer, here’s where to find me.
